How Carl Sagan Impacted SETI

Carl Sagan had a large impact on SETI. When government budget cutters wanted to stop SETI, Carl sold his novel Contact, a book inspired by SETI, to Hollywood. He then produced it in order to receive enough profit to save SETI. Since then SETI has flourished.
" The traditional approach to SETI is based on the belief that alien civilizations are targeting Earth with narrow-band radio message."
- Paul Davies, " The Eerie Silence"

Today SETI employes over 130 scientists, educators, and support staff. Research there is based off of three main centers, one of which is the Carl Sagan Center. The Carl Sagan Center was formed to study life in the universe, something Carl was fascinated with. It has a very wide range of research that includes the study of organisms in extreme environments; missions to explore our solar system for life, existing or extinct; and new searches for extra solar worlds similar to earth.
" Carl would have been thrilled that this new center, devoted to pursuing the scientific questions that fascinated him most, will bear his name."
